Finished, Maybe?

I had my final radiation treatment on Wednesday. 33 in total. As for what happens now, I don't really know.

My creatinine levels are compromised, so I have to have blood work done locally next week. My transplant doctor has suspended some drugs just in case. The chemo drug I was receiving is known to be unkind to kidneys.

I'm off of solid foods due to my throat and mouth hurting so much. I can't taste anything, either, so it is a strange experience. The next 2 weeks are crucial to my healing. The skin around my neck is a very dark red in addition to peeling and stinging. I'll need to consume enough calories and protein to help it all heal in the meantime.

Most of my time is spent sleeping. The fatigue from radiation is mind numbing. As appointments appear on my schedule, I'll keep you all informed of what happens next.

When I was in the hospital and couldn't eat, there was always a protein shake on my tray. Vanilla ice cream, a scoop of protein and lactaid milk, which I asked for because I thought otherwise my stomach might get upset.

At home I use Jay Robb vanilla whey protein, which I got at Whole Foods. Whatever health food store you have near you will have the ones with the most protein. This one has 25 grams per serving.

My mother made me what we called fruit mush, apples, strawberries and whatever you have, cooked with a little water like you would make applesauce.

Water tasted especially metallic, but I found that it tasted better with a little lemon. Maybe you could keep your lemon-water near you and take just a few sips whenever you can.

Thinking of you and I hope this helps.

Find the foods that work, like ice cream or milkshakes, and just keep going. I know you and Chris are both fighters, and will get through this! Sorry I haven't been reading the blogs much, but I know Patricia would want me to keep in contact. My thoughts are with you.

I don't know if this is of any value...but I like Dr. Gregor's website:

http://nutritionfacts.org/2014/02/25/ginger-lemon-balm-for-radiation-exposure/

Skip down to the part about Ginger and Lemon Balm tea...

Hope you heal quickly and feel better soon!

Rest Up my Dear. You deserve it! I hope your throat and mouth recover quickly so you can consume calories and protein to aid in the healing process. I'm sorry you have to go through this, but hope it's behind you now... just rest up... xoxoxo

Please let me know if I can get you ANYTHING!! I'd be more than happy to get a jar of the Jay Robb protein (mentioned above...or below, whatever) or some organic fresh juices, or whatever your specific diet and heart desires. Glad to hear you're almost finished with treatment & it's nasty side effects. Can't wait until your in tip top shape and craving Sushi Yama :)

Dear Ann and Chris, I've kept up with your blog, off and on, for quite some time. Things seemed to be normalizing for you guys and I was so very happy for you. I haven't popped in for a while and am so surprised and saddened to see the latest in your story. A prayer is lifted that you will beat this cancer and regain your health and strength quickly.
